NH Theatre Awards

Congratulations to all of the Winners of
the Inaugural NH Theatre Awards

Special Award Winner

Special Honoree: Francis Grover Cleveland

"There is no doubt that we have esprit de corps. We work together, and no one nit picks. But most of all, I think, we approach our work, agonizing as it frequently is, with gayety, bounce, and a certain humility. Too many theatre people, including actors, are inclined to see themselves as latter-day Messiahs of a new order, as if they, and they only, understood why we are what we are. Hence they are cynical, or absurd, or obscene, or psychoanalytical, but never just people. Through these attitudes they bemoan the fate of the world. The latter are not happy, I admit, but to me the theatre is a place where one should be joyous, even in sadness.

"I don't think we must always roll in the aisles with laughter, but I think that we should see a play with interest rather than soul-searching. Supposing that a happy ending is not real, that in life, endings are more likely to be bitter, or worse yet, not likely to be endings at all? Can't we hope, can't we wish, can't we try?"
